Legend has it a family with sixteen children lived in this tree during the 1800's. The truth is a little less interesting, but not much. It was occupied by a German immigrant called Johann Herbig from 1855 to 1860, during which time he married and had his first of the sixteen living in the tree. Once they had their second, they built a small hut to house them all.
